420 in 2025: A Holiday Still Rolling Through History

April 20th, known widely and fondly as 420, is no longer just a subcultural wink between stoners. What began as a secret code among high school kids has transformed into an international holiday, a billion-dollar marketing opportunity, and—most importantly—a symbol of evolving cannabis acceptance and culture. But where did this mystical number come from? What keeps it alive over fifty years later? And why does it still matter?

To understand the significance of 420 in 2025, we have to dig into the roots—both historical and cultural.

From The Halls of San Rafael to the Heart of Counterculture

The most credible and widely accepted origin of 420 traces back to the early 1970s in San Rafael, California, at San Rafael High School. A group of friends who called themselves “The Waldos” (thanks to their preferred hangout spot—a wall outside school) would gather after class to smoke cannabis.

They’d meet at 4:20 p.m. at the statue of Louis Pasteur on campus. “420 Louis” became their codeword for getting together to light up. As TIME Magazine documented, one Wardo’s father managed real estate for The Grateful Dead, and another had a brother who was close friends with Phil Lesh, the band’s bassist. Through this tight Bay Area web, their quirky timecode began to catch on among the Dead’s expansive fanbase—the Deadheads.

Soon, 420 went on tour. And like a good joint passed clockwise in a circle, the term made its way into underground flyers, word of mouth, and eventually into the pages of High Times Magazine in 1991, thanks to reporter Steve Bloom. That publication would go on to cement 420 as a sacred number in cannabis lore.

Beard Bros Take: Legends, Myths & Cultural Momentum

In a 2018 article, we playfully unpacked the chaos of conflicting stories surrounding 420. Was it Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” because 12 x 35 = 420? Was it a police code from San Francisco? Or Bob Marley’s birthday? (Spoiler: it’s not—he was born in February.)

While these urban legends continue to circulate like well-worn lighters, Beard Bros. reminded us that it’s the mystique itself that helped fuel the legend. And that’s what made 420 more than a timestamp—it became a shared identity.

They also pointed out something powerful: the holiday continues to evolve. Beard Bros noted in 2018 that even major media outlets were getting in on the fun, with MSNBC hosts like John Heilemann publicly announcing their love for the “holiday” on-air. Events like the High Times Cannabis Cup were expanding (even with last-minute permit hiccups), and mainstream America was almost cool enough to dab on camera.

Flash forward to 2025, and we’re living in a dramatically different cannabis world. While federal legalization in the U.S. remains elusive (with rescheduling still a topic of debate), over 70% of the country supports legal weed. Major corporations are cashing in on the 4/20 buzz—whether it’s fast food specials, social media campaigns, or even “elevated” events with celebrity chefs pairing cannabis with fine dining.

Yet beneath the gloss lies the soul of the sesh—community, ritual, and remembrance.

420 has moved from protest smoke-ins to immersive experiences. Events now range from music festivals and hash lounges to educational conferences and criminal justice reform fundraisers. In many ways, it has become a cultural reset button, where people reconnect with the plant, with each other, and with the movement that made this all possible.

Don’t Forget: It’s Still Political

For all the good vibes, 420 still holds serious significance in 2025. Thousands remain incarcerated for cannabis crimes in states where it’s now legal. Activists like Edwin Rubis, serving a 40-year sentence for a nonviolent offense, have become symbolic of the urgent need for cannabis justice reform.

420 is the perfect time to celebrate, yes—but also to organize. To call out injustice. To remind the industry that profit shouldn’t overshadow purpose. That’s why many groups now host dual 4/20 events—one part celebration, one part rally.

So, What Does 420 Mean in 2025?

It means whatever you bring to the sesh.

To some, it’s a moment of relaxation and ritual. To others, it’s a symbol of political resistance. For the cannabis-curious, it’s an invitation. For legacy growers and operators, it’s a badge of honor. And for everyone in between, it’s a day to remember that this plant—and this movement—didn’t survive by accident. It endured because of community, culture, and relentless advocacy.

As we at Beard Bros here put it:

“The real story of 4/20 is that it is constantly changing and evolving, and by doing so, is starting to steer our culture as a whole.”

So light one up for The Waldos. For the Deadheads. For the legacy brands. For the freedom fighters. For the future. Because 420 is no longer just a number—it’s a narrative still being written.
