Town Hall Meeting Tonight at East Stroudsburg University Seeks to Curb Opioid Abuse

Pennsylvania ranks 4th in the nation in opioid-related deaths

5,260 lives were lost to this epidemic in 2017 alone – that is more than 10 unnecessary deaths every single day in Pennsylvania

Medical Marijuana is a safe alternative treatment

These will be the topics discussed at an important town hall meeting happening tonight from 6:00-7:30pm at East Stroudsburg University in the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Room 336.

Heroin and opioid abuse are now the leading causes of accidental death in the state of Pennsylvania, killing more each year than fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Meanwhile, the state has no legal provision for the recreational adult use of cannabis, and their medical marijuana laws are pretty lame.

For example, patients under Pennsylvania’s MMJ program can only keep a “30 day supply” in their stash. Until just a few weeks ago, that supply could only consist of tinctures, topical oils, and cannabis-infused pills or liquids. On April 18th, the State Health Secretary finally allowed permitted dispensaries to provide actual herbal meds/buds n’ nugs. Unfortunately, state law says you must vape your flowers, it’s technically still illegal to smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em. Oh, and you cannot grow your own. Like we said…lame.

Working to change that are the fine folks over at Natural Care as they host tonight’s crucial town hall style discussion on how cannabis could potentially be the answer to Pennsylvania’s painkiller problem.

Speaking at the open forum event will be four experts in their own right, each offering a unique perspective on the topic.

Senator Mike Folmer  –  Sponsored state bill SB3; legalization of medical marijuana

Corporal Larry McDaniel  –  Drug Recognition Expert, State Law Enforcement

Dr. Bruce Nicholson  –  Director, Division of Pain Management Lehigh Valley Health Network

Ry Prichard  –  Cannabis Expert, Co-Host of Viceland’s “Bong Appetit”

Currently, the state’s medical marijuana program only lists 23 possible “Qualifying Conditions” for would-be patients who register. The spectrum of ailments that cannabis can have a beneficial impact on spans far more than 23 entries. But, to be fair, one of the conditions listed is Opiate Dependency, so it appears that someone in the ranks of local government is paying attention.
