What’s the biggest challenge facing the cannabis industry right now, and how are you and/or your company addressing it?

The biggest challenge facing the cannabis industry right now is operational legitimacy — specifically, the inability of many operators to run their businesses with the same infrastructure, compliance, and workforce sophistication that exists in every other industry. Between 280E tax burdens, constantly shifting state regulations, and the stigma that still lingers in traditional financial and HR ecosystems, cannabis businesses are being asked to perform at a high level with one hand tied behind their back.

At Green Leaf Business Solutions, we’re directly addressing this. We specialize in the full employee lifecycle — payroll, HR, tax, and HCM back-office operations — built specifically for the cannabis industry, nationwide. But what truly separates us is our philosophy: we are a partner, not a provider. We’re not dropping off a service and moving on. We are embedded in our clients’ businesses, understanding their challenges, anticipating their needs, and growing alongside them. That’s not a tagline — it’s how we operate every single day.

Where do you see the most exciting opportunity for growth and innovation in cannabis?

Workforce infrastructure. Full stop. Everyone talks about product innovation, retail experience, and legalization timelines — and those conversations matter — but the most underleveraged opportunity in this industry is building the people-operations backbone that will allow cannabis companies to truly scale.

As federal rescheduling conversations accelerate and more states come online, the operators who will win are the ones who have their HR, payroll, compliance, and tax operations locked in before the floodgates open. That’s exactly where Green Leaf is positioned. And the way we get there isn’t by selling software or sending invoices — it’s by being a partner, not a provider. We sit at the table with our clients, help them think through workforce strategy, and make sure that when growth comes, their infrastructure is ready to absorb it.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to break into the cannabis industry?

Stop treating cannabis like it’s a special industry that operates outside the rules of good business — and start treating it like the serious, regulated, high-growth industry it actually is. The ones who thrive understand that compliance, people management, and infrastructure are non-negotiables.

My advice is to find your lane and go deep. Become the most knowledgeable person in your space as it applies to cannabis. And when you find the right people to work with — whether clients, employers, or collaborators — choose partners, not providers. That distinction is at the core of everything we do at Green Leaf. Anyone can deliver a transaction. Very few can deliver a relationship that actually moves your business forward.

What is the most important thing you have learned from your experiences in the cannabis industry?

That cannabis operators don’t just want a vendor — they want someone who genuinely has their back. They’ve been burned before. By systems not built for their reality. By advisors who treated them as an afterthought. So when you show up with real expertise, real responsiveness, and a real commitment to their success, it lands differently.

What I’ve learned is that the most important thing you can do in this industry is earn trust. The only way to earn it is to actually be a partner, not a provider. That means knowing what 280E means for their workforce costs, understanding the nuances of multi-state compliance, and answering the phone when something changes. At Green Leaf, that’s not a value we hang on the wall. It’s the standard we hold ourselves to every day.

What do you want your legacy to be as it relates to the cannabis industry?

I want my legacy to be that I helped professionalize it. That Green Leaf Business Solutions was part of the reason cannabis companies stopped being treated — and stopped treating themselves — as second-class businesses. That we helped operators across the country build workforces with dignity, pay their people accurately and on time, and grow with confidence.

But more than anything, I want to be remembered as someone who showed up as a partner, not a provider — in every conversation, every client relationship, and every decision we made as a company. The cannabis industry is at an inflection point, and the businesses that will define its future are the ones built on real relationships and real trust. That’s what we’re building at Green Leaf. One payroll run, one HR policy, one partnership at a time.
