Berkeley Patients Group and Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Berkeley to be recognized August 21 for their roles in patient dignity, compassion activism and community care.
BERKELEY, CA — On Friday, August 21, The Cannabis Trail will celebrate an important chapter of California cultural history with a Cultural Landmark Ceremony & Gathering honoring Berkeley Patients Group (BPG) and Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Berkeley (CBCB).
The free public gathering will take place at the historic Chapel of Flowers, 3049 Adeline Street in Berkeley, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and the ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Together, the two Cultural Landmarks tell a distinctly Berkeley story — one rooted in compassion activism, patient dignity, safe access and community care.
Berkeley’s place in cannabis history extends far beyond commerce or legalization. The city became an important environment for people organizing around medical access, public education, caregiving and the dignity of patients during an era when cannabis remained deeply stigmatized and criminalized.
“Berkeley has long been a place where culture, ideas and social change intersect,” said Jeffrey Church, President and CEO of Visit Berkeley. “The Cannabis Trail Landmarks give visitors another meaningful way to understand Berkeley through the people, places and movements that helped shape our community and California culture.”
Two Landmarks. One Berkeley Story.
Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Berkeley tells a story of grassroots compassion — neighbors helping neighbors, people sharing food and medicine, and a community creating its own systems of care when traditional institutions often fell short.
“Compassion meant taking care of people — making sure they had medicine, food, community and someone looking out for them,” said Aundre Speciale of Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Berkeley. “This Landmark honors that spirit and the people who built a culture of care when doing so required courage.”
Berkeley Patients Group tells a story of patient dignity — of people organizing for safe access, continuity of care, and the right to be treated with compassion and respect as medical cannabis moved from the margins toward public acceptance.
“Before legalization and commercialization, this was a patient-rights movement.” said Etienne Fontan of Berkeley Patients Group. “People were sick, stigmatized and sometimes criminalized for seeking relief. Berkeley helped prove that patients deserved safe access, dignity and compassion. This Landmark honors the patients and advocates whose courage helped change California.”
Together, the two Landmarks invite residents and visitors to experience California cannabis history through the people, relationships and acts of compassion that helped shape it.
Cannabis Heritage as Cultural Heritage
The Berkeley designations are part of The Cannabis Trail’s growing network of Cultural Landmarks and Points of Interest across Northern California.
Through physical Landmarks, interactive signage, maps, digital storytelling and community gatherings, The Cannabis Trail preserves cannabis heritage in the places where the history happened.
The Trail also creates a new cultural-tourism lens through which visitors can understand California — connecting cannabis to broader histories of medicine, activism, agriculture, migration, prohibition, social change and community life.
Berkeley is particularly significant because its cannabis story intersects with the city’s broader traditions of civic participation, cooperative culture and social experimentation.
The Berkeley Cultural Landmarks join a growing trail connecting communities and stories from the Bay Area through Northern California’s legacy cannabis regions.
