Recap: Smoke-laced Comedy Show Hosted at Cookies NYC

Comedy and cannabis came together for a night of laughter and good vibes at the Cookies NYC clothing store last week.

Presented by The Lost Canna Club, the show was a great example of the intersectionality between legacy operators and license-holders in New York.

Held in a speakeasy-like space above the Cookies store in Herald Square, the event was emceed by comedian Matt Richards with Deejay Gatica providing the tunes and featured several pot-friendly comedians.

The event marked the first time that the Cookies NYC store hosted a comedy show.

As one might expect from a comedy show at Cookies, about 100 attendees hotboxed the room with gnarly amounts of the ZaZa.

With no ventilation system, one comedian nailed it when he called out the audience for being too high to remember how to laugh out loud.

Meet the Host: The Lost Canna Club

The Lost Canna Club was first launched in Los Angeles in 2014 under a different name by CB, a Black, Puerto Rican, and Native American woman from Brooklyn, New York.

The legacy operation was rebranded as The Lost Canna Club in January 2021 and began sponsoring comedy shows around Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The Lost Canna Club now hosts its own events in collaboration with comedian Matt Richards.

The event at Cookies NYC was the 3rd such show produced by the Club featuring Richards and sold out in just 1 week.

Past shows include an event at Work’n’Roll, the venue which held the recent Ricky Williams Monday Night Football party.

Cannabis Licensing Process in New York City

When asked about the cannabis licensing process in NYC, a process marked by controversy and a major lawsuit, Lost Canna Club-founder CB stated, “New York is lucky to have so many advocates fighting to ensure an equitable and socially-just legal market. Overall, I think the process seems fair but we as a cannabis community have to hold the OCM accountable as the roll-out continues and new regulations are introduced.”

While The Lost Cannabis Club will eventually seek licensing or a partnership with a licensed cannabis processor, for now, the group plans to focus on bringing cannabis and comedy together through events like the one held at Cookies NYC last week.

“When we head down the licensing path, we will retain our focus on sustainability,” CB mentioned, “The cannabis industry has a sizeable environmental footprint, so things like our jar recycling program will be a priority. However we can do our part, we will.”

While it’s anyone’s guess how long legacy cannabis events like this one will last as the crack down on grey-area cannabis activity in New York City intensifies, it’s obvious that interest in the social consumption of cannabis in New York City is growing more and more every day.
