Arkansas Approaching $1 Billion In Medical Marijuana Sales

Arkansas became the 33rd state in the US to legalize medical marijuana in November 2016 through a ballot initiative. Since then, the state has seen significant growth and success in its medical cannabis industry. In fact, Arkansas is now approaching an impressive milestone – $1 billion in total medical marijuana sales since the industry launched in May 2019.

This milestone is a testament to the success and growth of the medical cannabis industry in Arkansas, especially considering that it is still limited to medical use only. As other states have begun legalizing recreational marijuana, Arkansas has shown that there is still a strong demand for medical cannabis among patients.

The state’s medical marijuana program has not only provided relief to patients suffering from various medical conditions, but it has also brought economic benefits to the state. Let’s take a closer look at the background and current data of medical marijuana sales in Arkansas.

Medical Marijuana In Arkansas

Arkansas’ journey towards legalizing medical marijuana began in 2016 when voters approved Amendment 98. This amendment allowed patients with qualifying conditions to obtain a medical marijuana ID card and purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries.

The state has a strict regulatory framework for its medical cannabis industry, including background checks for dispensary owners and employees, limits on the number of dispensaries and cultivation facilities, and strict packaging and labeling requirements.

In comparison to other states with legal medical marijuana markets, Arkansas has a relatively limited program. However, this has not hindered its success in generating significant sales and tax revenue for the state.

Current Medical Marijuana Sales Data in Arkansas

According to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), the state has recorded over $965 million in medical marijuana sales since the industry launched. This is a significant increase from the previous year’s total sales of $523 million.

“Overall, patients have spent more than $965 million on medical marijuana purchases since the industry launched in May 2019,” according to a statement from Scott Hardin, a spokesperson for the Department of Finance and Administration. “This included $31 million in 2019, $182 million in 2020, $265 million in 2021, $276 million in 2022 and $211 million through September this year. With monthly sales averaging $23.4 million, we remain on track to set a new sales record this year.”

In terms of tax revenue, the state has collected over $113 million in taxes from medical marijuana sales since its launch. As for monthly sales data, August and September saw record-breaking  $23 million worth of products, totaling 10,765 pounds of flower.

These figures highlight the continued growth and success of medical marijuana sales in Arkansas. It’s also worth noting that there has been a steady increase in sales each year, indicating a strong demand for medical cannabis among patients.

Not only are sales numbers and tax revenues increasing for the medical marijuana program in Arkansas, but also the amount of users. Since the first dispensaries opened in 2019, demand for medical marijuana has grown with 96,056 active medical marijuana ID cards issued in Arkansas compared with 89,855 in January 2023, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

The success of Arkansas’ medical marijuana program is undeniable, with the state approaching $1 billion in total sales since its launch in 2019. This milestone not only highlights the strong demand for medical cannabis among patients, but also the economic benefits it has brought to the state.

Despite being limited to medical use only, Arkansas’ medical marijuana industry has generated over $113 million in tax revenue and continues to see growth each year. With more and more patients enrolling in the program, it’s clear that medical marijuana has become a vital part of healthcare in Arkansas.

As the industry continues to thrive, it’s exciting to see what the future holds for medical cannabis in Arkansas. One thing is for sure – with its success thus far, there is no doubt that the state will continue to set records and make a positive impact on both patients and the economy.

So, let’s celebrate this milestone as we look forward to even greater success in the years to come.
