Arkansas Using Cannabis Tax Revenue To Combat Food Insecurity

Arkansas has seen some success in its medical cannabis program since it was legalized in 2016. In just a few short years, the state’s medical marijuana sales have reached over $1 billion, with profits extending beyond the growers and dispensaries to benefit Arkansans in need.

One notable example of this is how the state is using cannabis tax revenue to combat food insecurity. Instead of using the funds for increasing law enforcement budgets like we’ve seen the Ohio Senate recently propose, Arkansas is setting an example by using it for the greater good.

In 2016, Arkansas joined the growing number of states legalizing medical cannabis. The program officially launched in 2019 with the opening of the first dispensary. Since then, sales have surpassed $1 billion, bringing in significant tax revenue for the state.

This success is a testament to how well-regulated and managed the medical cannabis industry is in Arkansas. With only 8 growers and 38 dispensaries, the state has been able to generate impressive profits while also providing access to a medical necessity for thousands of patients.

Medical Cannabis Tax Revenue Helping Fight Food Insecurity

One of the ways Arkansas is using cannabis tax revenue to combat food insecurity is by distributing funds to schools across the state. According to KATV, $87 million had been allocated for University of Arkansas Medical School to obtain a National Cancer Center designation, now the funds are going to food insecurity. Which will be spread throughout schools across the state.

“A billion dollars has been spent to purchase medical marijuana but what that means for the state is that we’ve collected 115 million dollars in state tax revenue. From that $115… $87 went to UAMS specifically as they tried to obtain that National Cancer Institute designation. Now there’s a change. Now that funding is going to go specifically to food insecurity,” Medical Marijuana Commission, Spokesperson, Scott Hardin said.

“What that’ll mean is, if someone is on a reduced school lunch, if they are now paying 50 cents to a dollar, that medical marijuana revenue steps in and pays that to ensure that a student gets that for free. So really students in the state will be not having to pay whatever that burden is. 50 cents, a $1.50 to have reduced school lunch so it really is, it’s affecting Arkansans in a positive way, ” Hardin said.

Despite the limited number of growers and dispensaries in Arkansas, the state has already seen a significant impact on its population. As of December 2023, there were 98,011 active medical cannabis ID cards in the state. This means that nearly 100,000 patients are benefitting from the program.

The success of Arkansas’ medical cannabis program is undeniable, but it also highlights the need for expansion. With a growing number of patients and an expected increase in revenue, it is clear that there is potential for even greater impact in the future.

As more states continue to legalize medical cannabis, Arkansas could serve as a prime example of how to effectively manage and utilize cannabis tax revenue for the betterment of its citizens. By expanding their successful system, the state could potentially reach even more individuals in need and combat food insecurity on an even larger scale. This not only benefits the patients, but also the overall well-being and nutrition of students in Arkansas schools.

Overall, Arkansas’ use of cannabis tax revenue to combat food insecurity is a shining example of how these funds can be utilized for good in the state. The success of the medical cannabis program and its impressive profits demonstrate not only the potential for financial gain, but also the positive impact it can have on its citizens. With continued expansion and utilization of these funds, Arkansas could continue to lead the way in using cannabis taxes for beneficial initiatives that benefit all members of society. So, other states must take note of this success story and consider implementing similar measures to truly maximize the benefits of legalizing medical cannabis.
