Marketwise
RW: So we want to talk about specifically European markets and maybe any others?
JP: What we need to do is essentially some due diligence on the markets that we think we want to enter. So, I think what you have to do before you start researching is you have to understand what role you play in the cannabis industry in general … If you’re a cultivator, you’re probably going to want to go somewhere where cultivation is active, thriving, and the rules have been fully developed.
JP: The EU functions very similar to our [US] federal government and the markets over there are individualized by country. When I go over to Europe, for example, I noticed I’m reading The Economist, … because I feel like it has a wide lens and it talks about the whole world. And that’s just what I’ve found that that gives me that education.
As more grows come online in Portugal, it’s obviously cheaper and quicker to get it from Portugal to [for example] Germany, than Australia or Canada to Germany.
Now, Macedonia has a lot of manufacturing facilities because it’s so cheap. The labor is cheap there. You’ve got sunshine in Greece, so you’ll start to see greenhouses. The market that’s really interesting for me: Iceland has the cheapest energy in Europe because they have these massive geothermal volcanoes and they have tapped that energy.
Legalwise
JP: We do need to be aware of, even though there may be certain laws that say it’s legal, you still could get arrested. … I have friends and clients that were out there and got arrested; so it can happen. We have to know where we’re going: what is legal, and what’s not.
Importantly,
JP: Even though the laws may say one thing, just be prepared because the local law enforcement may not realize that. That’s why it’s important to have a boots on the ground person that knows what’s going on because then you don’t have to step on landmines inadvertently. I think the biggest lesson that I would impart to the audience is you need to have your ducks in a row and you can’t just wing it. You need to know what the immigration rules are for residency.
JP: I think asking those questions, understanding your culture, finding the boots on the ground and doing your research is very important to not spend your money unwisely.
