The 2026 California Cannabis Awards (CCA) has officially opened its submission window—and this year, it may carry more weight than ever.

After all, the state’s industry is at an inflection point.

Margins are tight. Taxes are still heavy. Enforcement remains uneven. And while federal rescheduling continues to loom over the industry, operators across the state are navigating one of the most challenging business climates since legalization. Despite this, the CCA seeks to amplify the community and create meaningful opportunities for operators simultaneously.

The fifth annual, state-sanctioned competition accepts entries through May 22nd. Categories include flower, pre-rolls, cartridges, edibles, concentrates, beverages, and wellness, with winners crowned July 18 at the California Cannabis Experience inside the California State Fair at Cal Expo in Sacramento.

But this isn’t just another trophy chase. It’s a public platform inside one of California’s most iconic institutions. And that’s not all that could be at stake.

A Competition Built for Mainstream Legitimacy

The California Cannabis Awards were designed from day one to raise the bar. Entries are lab-tested by SC Labs and evaluated by expert judges from Budist using a 100-point scoring system. Logistics are handled by embarc, Nabis, and Redwood Roots—a supply chain built for transparency and compliance.

In short, this isn’t vibes judging. It’s scientific, standardized evaluation.

At a time when reform conversations are accelerating nationwide, competitions like this help demonstrate that regulated cannabis can meet and exceed the standards expected of any agricultural product in the mainstream economy.

In a press release, Tom Martinez, CEO of the California Exposition & State Fair, said this is precisely what the competition achieves.

“The California Cannabis Awards reflect the same spirit of excellence that defines the Fair itself, recognizing the skill, stewardship, and dedication contributing to California’s diverse agricultural landscape.”

By placing award-winning brands inside the California State Fair, where hundreds of thousands of adults can learn about, purchase, and consume cannabis legally, the CCA continues to model what responsible integration can look like.

Winning, or even placing, in a state-sanctioned, scientifically judged competition provides something beyond a medal. It offers validation in front of consumers, policymakers, and mainstream institutions.

“Five years ago, this level of acceptance within a state institution would have seemed aspirational,” said Lauren Carpenter, CEO of embarc. “Today, it’s a reality. This competition proves cannabis can be evaluated with measurable standards and celebrated responsibly.”

There’s also the fact that best-in-show, Golden Bear winners will have unique retail opportunities outside of Cal Expo, thanks to partner retailer embarc. The products will be sold at select embarc locations across the state during exclusive drops, and enjoy in-store marketing to highlight their achievements.

For operators, that exposure isn’t symbolic. It’s survival.

Taking It Back To The Old School With Home Grow

The California Cannabis Awards has been celebrating the state’s regulated operators for half a decade. But in 2026, they’re taking it back where it all began.

For the first time, the California Cannabis Awards is launching a Home Grow Competition to recognize flower cultivated by California residents for personal, non-commercial use.

Home cultivation has always been the cultural backbone of California cannabis. Long before licenses, METRC tags, and retail footprints, there were backyard growers, garage breeders, and caregivers perfecting craft techniques out of pure passion.

Now, that passion gets a legitimate State Fair platform.

The Home Grow competition will evaluate entries based on quality, consistency, and technical execution, applying the same spirit of rigor to personal cultivation that licensed brands receive. Flower will undergo analytical testing via SC Labs just like the licensed product. Gold medal winners will then move on to a live judging event, with winners announced at the CA Cannabis Experience inside the California State Fair on July 25th.

The addition recognizes something the industry sometimes forgets: legalization didn’t invent cannabis excellence, it inherited it.

“We would not be here today without the small farmers of the past,” said James Leitz, founder of Fair Play Ventures and producer of the CCA. “We wanted to get back to our roots—recognize those who came before us and honor the home growers who carry on the craft tradition today.”

A Signal to the Rest of the Country

Five years in, the California Cannabis Awards have become something more than a competition. They are a test case.

Can cannabis be evaluated with scientific rigor?
Can it be celebrated publicly in a responsible environment?
Can it coexist with traditional agricultural showcases?

California says yes.

And as federal reform discussions continue to evolve, the optics of responsible integration matter. The CCA doesn’t just reward excellence—it demonstrates it.

For other states watching closely, this is what a normalized, regulated cannabis culture can look like.
