Innovator and Advocate JM Balbuena Shares Her Journey in Cannabis Industry and Advocacy

In a recent episode of “Some Guys Talking” on the Beard Bros Media Network, guest JM Balbuena offered an inspiring and in-depth look into her multifaceted career as an author, filmmaker, cannabis entrepreneur, and passionate advocate for plant medicine. Her story underscores the transformative power of cannabis and highlights ongoing efforts to advance cannabis legalization and medical access, especially for terminally ill patients.

From Military Service to Cannabis Advocacy: A Personal Transformation

Born in the Dominican Republic, Balbuena moved to the United States at age 13, settling in New Jersey with her family. She pursued a degree in marketing from the University of Scranton, followed by an internship and a corporate career. However, her desire for purpose and action led her to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where she served as an aviation electronics technician for six years, including deployments aboard the USS John C. Stennis.

Her military service was marked by a life-altering accident during a deployment, which resulted in a concussion and ongoing recovery. Struggling with sleep issues and PTSD, Balbuena was introduced to cannabis by a fellow veteran, a revelation that dramatically changed her life. “Cannabis helped me sleep for the first time in three years and eased my tension,” she recounted. This personal breakthrough ignited her passion for cannabis as medicine and propelled her into the industry.

Breaking Stigmas and Building a Business in Cannabis

Despite the traditional stigma surrounding cannabis in her native Dominican Republic, Balbuena’s firsthand experience revealed the plant’s potential to heal and empower. Her journey into entrepreneurship began with a desire to educate and destigmatize, leading her to write her first book, The Successful Entrepreneur, which chronicles her path from military to business.

Her dedication to advocacy and education continued with the publication of her latest book, Green Renaissance, which explores the cultural, historical, and wellness aspects of cannabis. She also founded or contributed to media projects such as the show Normalization Island on Beard Bros Media, which aims to normalize and promote understanding of cannabis worldwide.

Her active involvement in the industry includes co-owning Jacks Cannabis in San Diego and pioneering legal cultivation efforts, including working with the Santa Isabel tribe to establish one of the first legal grows in San Diego County.

Creating Content and Building Community

Balbuena’s marketing background and passion for filmmaking have fueled her content creation efforts. She pursued a media production degree to hone her storytelling skills, producing videos, podcasts, and live events like the now-postponed San Diego-based talk show Cannabis Synergy. Her content aims to educate, inspire, and dismantle stereotypes, leveraging her platform for broader impact.

Her advocacy also extends to legislative efforts, notably supporting California’s SB 311, known as Ryan’s Law, which allows terminally ill patients to consume non-smokable cannabis in hospice care. She works with the Ryan’s Law Foundation to expand such protections nationwide, emphasizing the importance of compassionate access to plant medicine.

The Power of Purpose and Responsibility in Cannabis

Throughout her discussion, Balbuena emphasized that her work is driven by a sense of responsibility to share the benefits of cannabis, especially for underserved communities and veterans. She views her role as a bridge between cultures, advocating for a more inclusive and informed industry.

She also highlighted the importance of compassion and community in building sustainable businesses. “Positive energy, education, and respect are the foundation of growth,” she stated. Her approach demonstrates that success in the cannabis space does not have to come at the expense of integrity or social responsibility.

Looking Ahead: Content, Collaboration, and Continued Advocacy

Fans of Balbuena can follow her work through her website, jm.com, and on social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn, where she actively engages with her audience. Her upcoming projects include an audiobook version of Green Renaissance and new episodes of Normalization Island, featuring exclusive visits like her trip to Bob Marley’s former residence and dispensary.

In closing, Balbuena expressed gratitude for the platform to share her story, inspiring others to pursue their purpose and advocate for change. Her journey exemplifies resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to harnessing the plant’s potential for societal good.
