Louisiana Passes Ryan’s Law: Another Win for Compassionate Care

Louisiana Passes Ryan’s Law: Another Win for Compassionate Care

Unbeknownst to many, there are frequent reminders that the cannabis plant is about more than business, politics, or market share.

Despite its many layers, it’s ultimately about humanity.

Last week, Louisiana became the eighth state in the nation to pass Ryan’s Law, joining California, Maryland, North Dakota, Mississippi, Oregon, Delaware, and Washington in recognizing the right of terminally ill patients to access medical cannabis while receiving care in healthcare facilities.

For those who have followed this movement from the beginning, this moment represents far more than another legislative victory.

Ryan’s Law was born from the story of Ryan Bartell, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who battled pancreatic cancer while living in Washington, a fully legal state. As Ryan approached the end of his life, medical cannabis helped provide relief and allowed him to remain more present with his loved ones. Yet accessing that medicine in a healthcare setting proved difficult, exposing a gap between state cannabis laws and mainstream patient care.

After Ryan passed away on April 21, 2018, his father Jim Bartell made a promise: no family should have to fight for compassionate access while simultaneously saying goodbye to a loved one.

That promise became a movement.

Today, the Ryan’s Law Foundation continues working with advocates, healthcare professionals, legislators, patients, and families to expand access across the country.

The significance of Louisiana’s passage extends beyond cannabis. At its core, Ryan’s Law is about patient dignity and ensuring that individuals facing terminal illnesses are able to make decisions about their own comfort and quality of life.

As more states adopt Ryan’s Law, conversations are expanding beyond legalization and into healthcare integration, implementation, and patient rights. Healthcare facilities are being challenged to rethink outdated assumptions while policymakers are being asked to consider what compassionate care should look like in the modern era.

Of course, the work isn’t finished.

Federal prohibition’s ups and downs continue to create uncertainty. Healthcare institutions still face implementation hesitation. Many advocates continue pushing for stronger protections and clearer guidance for patients and providers alike.

One this is for sure; progress is happening.

Louisiana’s victory demonstrates that compassionate care remains a bipartisan issue capable of bringing together advocates, healthcare professionals, veterans, families, and lawmakers.

For the cannabis community, it’s also a reminder of why many entered this movement in the first place: the people.

And thanks to Ryan Bartell’s legacy, more patients now have access to comfort, dignity, and choice during some of life’s most difficult moments.

That’s a victory worth celebrating.
