Terpenes and Theobromine: Celebrating World Chocolate Day In Style

After a decade of living in Los Angeles and networking in the cannabis industry, you get used to unique, interesting events occurring on the regular. In a sense you get spoiled by it, and it’s something you don’t truly realize until you move to another city. Such is the case the past few years living in Sacramento, where the great event experiences are few and far between. So, when the opportunity arises you jump at the chance.

Chelsea Lucich, the creative mastermind behind SeaLoops Productions, once again demonstrated her uncanny knack for creating an unforgettable experience with “Terpenes & Theobromine,” a groundbreaking dinner event that took a deep dive into the educational and sensory interplay of cannabis and chocolate. Initially set to unfold in a historic underground speakeasy in Marysville, the event had to pivot to the stunning Bella Fiore in Yuba City due to an unforeseen heat wave—an adjustment that only added to the evening’s theme of resilience and flexibility.

“Terpenes & Theobromine” was born out of a serendipitous encounter when Chelsea was introduced to an out-of-town chocolatier on World Chocolate Day. This chance meeting sparked the concept of an education-focused dinner. Although the initial collaborators couldn’t join, Chelsea skillfully brought together a new team, all from Yuba City and nearby Nevada City, proving that when one door closes, another opens, often with even more exciting possibilities.

The evening was meticulously curated to slow the pace and cultivate a sense of community, embodying the ‘Entourage Effect’—the notion that the collective experience surpasses the sum of its parts. Attendees were treated to a harmonious blend of flavors and knowledge starting with Botanas y Aguas Frescas, followed by a Nectarine & Nopol Salad. The main course was Emmoladas de Mole Rosa, with Arroz con Leche de Coco finishing off this orgy for the senses, with each course being organic, locally sourced, and gluten-free.

Key collaborations from local luminaries included Chef Stephany from Panaderia Matilija, Sean Hula of Flying Lion Research (Tajin), and Ariel Wolansky of Choquiero Chocolate. The event also featured exquisite hash concentrates crafted by Jeremy Richardson of Forté (GMO) and Juan Sanctuary of Solventless Sanctuary (Strawberry Candy)

Sean from Flying Lion Research brought his expertise in terpene profiles to the table, sharing his unique creation: “To mimic the vibrant flavor of the Mexican spice blend Tajin, I crossed Lemoncane 66 for its sour citrus notes with Chile Verde for its robust pepper flavor, creating a salted lime profile rarely encountered in the world of rosin.”

Sean’s farm, established in 2016 and located just below Grass Valley in Penn Valley, adheres to biodynamic farming principles. They grow their own plants for teas, extracts, and use in their integrated pest management (IPM) program. By following the biodynamic calendar for planting and harvesting, they’ve dedicated the last eight years to perfecting fresh frozen cannabis and genetics optimized for this process.

Long-standing partnerships with sponsors like Potli, Kiva, Cannacraft Brands, That Good Good, Happy Trails, and Puffco ensured a night of exceptional quality and sustainability, spotlighting earth-friendly practices and soil rejuvenation efforts.

The true magic of “Terpenes & Theobromine” lay in the pairing of rich, artisanal chocolates with high-quality hash concentrates. This pairing highlighted the profound sensory experiences that arise from combining these two indulgent elements. The depth and complexity of the chocolate flavors seamlessly intertwined with the distinct terpene profiles of the hash, offering an unparalleled tasting experience that elevated the evening to new heights.

“Terpenes & Theobromine” transcended the typical event, becoming a narrative of community, adaptability, and the profound bonds between food, culture, and cannabis. Chelsea aims to make this an annual tradition, inviting everyone to partake in a celebration of community through flavor and fellowship.

Keep an eye out for a fall activation in the originally planned speakeasy, and follow Chelsea at @ChelseaLoops for updates on future events that promise to blend education, enjoyment, and extraordinary community experiences.
