Maryland Accepting First Round Of Adult-Use Cannabis License Applications

The state of Maryland has officially opened the application period for the first round of adult-use cannabis licenses. This initial round, which will run from November 13th to December 12th, is reserved exclusively for social equity applicants. For those interested in entering the cannabis industry, this news marks a significant opportunity to obtain one of the 179 licenses being awarded by the Maryland Cannabis Administration (MCA).

In an effort to promote diversity and inclusion within the cannabis industry, Maryland has implemented a social equity program for potential license applicants. Eligible individuals must have at least 65% ownership of the business and meet specific criteria related to residency or education in areas disproportionately impacted by cannabis prohibition.

The state has also established a verification process to ensure that applicants meet these criteria. This is an important step towards addressing the unequal impact of past cannabis policies on certain communities in Maryland. For many individuals, attending public school or a four-year institution in these areas made them eligible for Pell Grants and now makes them eligible for social equity program.

Types of Licenses Being Awarded in Maryland’s First Round

The MCA will be issuing a total of 179 licenses across six different types, including standard dispensaries, growers, processors, micro growers, microprocessors, and micro dispensaries. The breakdown and distribution of these licenses vary by region and license type.

  • 75 Standard Dispensaries – distributed by County
  • 16 Standard Growers – distributed by Region
  • 32 Standard Processors – distributed by Region
  • 24 Micro Growers – distributed by Region
  • 24 Micro Processors – distributed by Region
  • 8 Micro Dispensaries – distributed by Region

The specific distribution of licenses can be found here, along with more detailed information about each license type and its requirements.

The application period for the first round of adult-use cannabis licenses in Maryland opened on November 13th and will close on December 12th. Interested individuals must submit their applications through the MCA’s online portal, along with all required documentation.

Social equity applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria and provide proof of residency or education in disproportionately impacted areas. Applicants are also limited to applying for only one license type, with the exception of standard dispensaries, which can be applied for up to three times in different regions.

To ensure fairness and equal opportunity, the MCA will use a random lottery system to allocate licenses based on license type and region. The deadline for the licensing lottery is set by Maryland law and will be announced on the MCA’s website.
