Research Shows Importance of Post-Harvest Care in Maximizing Terpenes and Trichomes in Quality Cannabis

Recent research has unveiled insights into how post-harvest drying methods significantly impact the overall quality of cannabis flower. These studies dive into the details of how environmental stability can preserve the key elements that make cannabis exceptional—terpenes and trichomes. For cultivators, understanding these findings can mean the difference between average and superior cannabis.

What is a Post-Harvest Drying Method?

Cannabis cultivation has come a long way, but the post-harvest process remains crucial to delivering high-quality products. Recent studies outlined in a press release by the Cannabis Research Coalition (CRC) in partnership with Cannatrol, have demonstrated how the drying environment affects the preservation of terpenes and trichomes, the essential compounds that contribute to the aroma, flavor, and potency of cannabis.

Post-harvest drying is the process of removing moisture from cannabis flowers after they are harvested. This step is vital for preventing mold and mildew, ensuring the product’s longevity, and preserving its quality. Different drying methods can have varying effects on the final product, particularly concerning the retention of terpenes and the integrity of trichomes.

Importance of Terpenes and Trichomes

Terpenes are organic compounds found in cannabis and many other plants. They are responsible for the distinct aromas and flavors of different cannabis strains. Beyond their sensory appeal, terpenes also play a crucial role in the “entourage effect,” enhancing the therapeutic benefits of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.

Trichomes are tiny, hair-like structures on the cannabis flower that produce terpenes, cannabinoids, and other beneficial compounds. These delicate structures are essential for the plant’s potency and overall quality. Preserving trichomes during the drying process is critical for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the cannabis flower.

“There are plenty of legacy cultivators growing good flower, but the key is to educate the community about the true science behind the cannabis post-harvest process,” said David Sandelman, CTO and Co-Founder of Cannatrol. “The science proves that maintaining vapor pressure levels keeps trichomes intact and delivers higher terpene retention with every harvest. By using these new methods in post-harvest, cultivators can consistently create more smokable cannabis that is superior in flavor, appearance and effect.”

Research Findings

The recent studies conducted by the CRC highlight the significance of vapor pressure in the drying environment. Vapor pressure refers to the pressure exerted by water vapor in the air, which can fluctuate based on temperature and humidity levels. Stable vapor pressure is crucial for preserving trichomes and retaining terpenes during the drying process.

The studies compared traditional drying methods with Cannatrol’s Cool Cure system, which maintains stable vapor pressure throughout the drying, curing, and storage phases. The findings were:

  • Terpene Retention: The Cool Cure system retained 16% more terpenes compared to traditional methods.
  • Trichome Integrity: Trichomes remained more intact and exhibited less coloration change when dried using the Cool Cure system.
  • Overall Quality: The consistent environment provided by the Cool Cure system resulted in cannabis that was superior in flavor, appearance, and effect.

Environmental Stability Matters with Terpenes and Trichomes

Fluctuations in vapor pressure can cause trichomes to rupture, leading to a loss of terpenes and cannabinoids. A stable drying environment minimizes these fluctuations, preserving the trichomes and maintaining the plant’s quality.

Decarboxylation is the process by which acidic cannabinoids (like THCA) convert into their active forms (like THC). While some decarboxylation is necessary, excessive decarboxylation during drying can degrade the cannabis quality. The studies found that the Cool Cure system caused less decarboxylation, resulting in higher quality cannabis.

Investing in advanced drying systems like Cannatrol’s Cool Cure could possibly enhance the quality of your cannabis based on the research provided. These systems provide a stable environment that preserves terpenes and trichomes, resulting in a better final product.

“Years of prohibition limited research into this plant, causing the cannabis industry to be fraught with tactics that have no scientific backing,” said Dr. Allison Justice, CEO of the CRC.

Benefits of High-Quality Cannabis

Consumers are increasingly seeking high-quality cannabis with rich flavors and potent effects. By preserving terpenes and trichomes, you can deliver a product that meets these expectations and stands out in a competitive market.

For medical marijuana patients, the preservation of terpenes can enhance the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Terpenes have been shown to have various health benefits and can work synergistically with cannabinoids to provide more effective relief.

High-quality cannabis commands higher prices and generates positive reviews, enhancing your brand’s reputation and marketability. By investing in advanced post-harvest practices, you can achieve a premium product that attracts consumers.
